Web Design Month at Cucumber – What You Need To Know

Happy February, *Cucumbers! 🙂

Happy February, and happy Web Design Month! That’s right! We are kicking off a new theme for the month and this month we will be talking all things web design, web development, seo, website management and much more.

I was talking to a potential client today and he said something that made me smile. A sad, but true kinda smile.

We were discussing how things we were going with his marketing at the moment, and naturally, we reviewed their website. He told me that they didn’t completely love it, but they were not yet ready to redesign it… again. The website was a couple of years old, and the pain from the process of redesigning the site was still fresh in their minds.

This brings me to one point that is being avoided by all web design agencies…

And here’s the question: is web design process painful?

Now, we will be talking about web design process this month in more detail, but here are 3 critical things I would like for you to take away with you today:

No matter what, it will be a lot of work

Here’s the thing, no matter how big or small your website needs to be – it will be a lot of work. Think about it, you already have your own job to “worry” about, and now you (if you are the one who is accountable for the process) will need to work with your web design agency of choice, to make sure they have everything they need to do the job right.

Marketing is always a collaboration. No matter how amazing your web design agency’s processes and project management systems are, your input will be necessary. Remember, you are the expert in your industry, and your marketing agency, who is building your new website, are the experts in what they do. Working together closely is key!

Anything worth doing is going to be hard. #CucumberQuotes Share on X

Lastly, have you ever done renos? Kitchen remodeling? Or simply, have you ever moved? Do you remember how much work it was? Things that are worth doing, require lots of attention and lots of effort, otherwise – so yes, no matter what, it will be a lot of work.

Choose a partner, not a vendor

Now, based on the point above, this one will make sense. When you are choosing a web design company, make sure you look for a partner, not a vendor. Marketing, web design or any other creative work is a more intimate process than say… hiring a window installer (no offense to window installers). The process lasts for at least 3 to 4 months (for a simple WordPress website) and you will go through a number of meeting, brainstorms, creative briefs, approvals, and testing sessions.

The bottom line is – make sure that you find a marketing agency that has similar values as your company, so if things do get hairy at some point through the process, you can be sure that the end result will be what you expected.

Do it the right way from the get-go

Last but not least – since it’s going to be a lot of work anyways – do make sure you don’t cut any corners and do it the right way from the get-go.

  • We might be biased, but we suggest going with a custom website design (not a template), to make sure that it’s done exactly to the parameters your business needs.
  • Take the time to review and approve the process thoroughly at each stage (research, wireframes, design, testing, etc.).
  • Ask lots of questions! No matter how much you know about web design, make sure you understand what’s included and what’s not included right at the beginning of the process (there’s usually an outline of the deliverables in the service agreement). This will save you lot’s of frustration and uncertainties down the road.
