For years, marketing was focused on a few key challenges. Businesses were trying to figure out how to find the right audience, where those people spend time, how to reach them, and how many times someone needed to see a message before they even noticed it. We used to talk a lot about frequency because people were not constantly exposed to information the way they are today.
But the environment has completely changed.
People are now receiving so much information at such speed that visibility is no longer the issue the way it used to be. Everyone is online. People are constantly scrolling, watching, searching, reading, comparing, and consuming information all day long. Ads, videos, emails, social media posts, AI-generated content, recommendations. The volume of information people process daily is massive.
So frequency is not really the problem anymore.
In fact, many parts of marketing are actually easier today than they used to be. It is easier to find people. It is easier to know what they want. It is easier to understand their interests, behaviours, and buying patterns because the platforms already contain most of this information.
Social media and advertising platforms allow businesses to target people very specifically. We can identify interests, behaviours, demographics, search intent, engagement patterns, and even test messaging quickly. And now with AI tools, businesses can create and adjust copy faster than ever before based on what people respond to.
So many of the traditional marketing problems we had in the past are not really the problems we have today.
People generally know what they want. And when they see something they need and want, they are usually willing to engage with it. That is why getting attention or even getting engagement is often not the hardest part anymore.
The real challenge is conversion.
Not even necessarily generating a marketing lead. Businesses can often generate clicks, traffic, views, and even inquiries. The bigger issue is getting people to actually take the sales step.
That is where many (small) businesses are struggling right now.
And this is why marketing today cannot operate separately from sales. Every marketer should be working closely with the sales team, and every small business owner working with a marketing team also needs to put a sales hat on.
Because what happens after engagement matters more than ever.
Marketing today needs to be sales-driven marketing. What happens after someone clicks, signs up, sends an inquiry, or shows interest is now one of the most important parts of the process.
Direct contact, direct follow-up matters and frequency of personalised (sales-focused follow up) communication is important for building trust and removing hesitation.
Think Fresh
If your marketing is generating attention, clicks, engagement, or even leads, but people are still not taking the next step, is the real problem your marketing… or is there a gap in the sales process after the engagement happens?
What happens after someone shows interest in your business?
