How UX Design Can Engage Your Audience

Have you been on a website that had a confusing navigation bar? Did it take too long for you to find what you were looking for? You probably didn’t go back to the site again. This is why UX design is a vital part of the web development process. Implementing a good user experience is key to keeping your visitors engaged.

What is UX design?

UX = User experience

User Experience design is all about how the audience interacts with your site. It should be enjoyable to use and shouldn’t be confusing, else the user will not be satisfied.

It’s important to make a good first impression when visiting your website. It is your brand, after all, it represents you, your business.

What are some of the key components to a positive user experience?

Usability

Is it easy to understand what the users are supposed to be doing on your site? Will they be able to achieve their goal quickly and easily? Ensure that you don’t overwhelm your users with too many options, this may confuse them. Instead, you should be guiding them.

How can you guide your user’s? Use CTA (call to action) buttons. These are links that will direct your audience to where they may want to go.

Ie. If the user is reading through one of your services in the website, add a link at the bottom leading them to the contact page. That way once they’re done reading, they can talk to you more about your business!

It’s important to make your tasks as efficient as possible. No one wants to go through 10 different pages trying to find how they can contact your company. It should be simple. The design of your website should guide the users to the target.

The performance of your website is important. If your site is taking too long to load, users will leave the site. It should take less than 2 seconds for a page to load, else the user will lose interest and leave.

Accessibility

It’s important for your site to be accessible to everyone. You need to consider many factors such as making sure you add alt (alternative) text to your images. This way people who cannot see are able to listen to the description of the image.

Create Personas

You should have an idea of your audience, especially if you’re marketing in Vancouver. What’s their age range? What do they want to do on the site? It’s good to have an idea of who your target audience will be to be able to design for them.

Design / Aesthetics

Is your site easy on the eyes? A bright yellow background on white text isn’t very easy to read. Is it clear that your title is separate from your paragraph? Having a clear layout of a page is important for users to differentiate sections, else it would be confusing going through the site.

If the user has a good experience on your site, they will visit again. UX design is important because it shows that you care about your customers. You want them to be satisfied and you want it to be easy for them to navigate through your site. You don’t want to frustrate them. Your audience will appreciate the time and effort you invested to ensure that they have a great experience.
