{Facebook} – How I went from being “helencat” to Helen Stepchuk. The Evolution of our identities.
Monday, April 25th, 2011
Last month (wow, it took me a while to write this post) I went to the Facebook event that was organized by SMEI and sponsored by Cucumber Marketing. The event was fantastic and I wanted to share some key points + my thoughts.
The world is changing, no doubt. We’ve seen “the Facebook movie,” we’ve seen people being trapped in Australia and getting themselves rescued by updating their Facebook wall, we’ve even seen someone naming their daughter Facebook (now, that’s original! :) So, what’s next? What’s the main reason for this so-called social revolution?
How does our psychology work? Some of the reasons…
1. We are influenced by our subconscious mind (the way we were brought up, etc.)
2. We are influenced by those whom we trust (our parents, our best friends, our network etc)
FACEBOOK for personal use (Social by Design)
Social! That’s the keyword. We are social beings and since the age of 1 (or even younger) we to learn how to fit in, how to belong. So, it is in our nature to listen to what people say about us and to compare ourselves to others or to even our own selves.
Facebook does just that. It gives us the opportunity to measure / assess the situation, it allows us to be a part of the community; it connects us to people that we barely know on a deeper level (and taking our relations to the next level by doing so), it helps us to express ourselves and allows us to BELONG!
Friends are influencing friends. Everything is better when your friends are there, too! This is so true. I do not think anyone would argue with this.
So, what exactly had happened in the last 3-5 years? How did we suddenly go from cowboy4646 or sexygirl246 to Mary Smitherson and Don Stinkerson? (Or from “helencat” to Helen Stepchuk, for that matter?)
By the way, have you noticed it? There’s less and less nicknames used in Social Media and more real names. Interesting, huh?!
We simply realized that our voices would be heard if we were being AUTHENTIC!
FACEBOOK for business:
Web is organized around people → Businesses are organized around people → Organizing around people delivers results.
Easy formula, huh?
We all know that people do not do business with businesses. People do business with people…. or a cookie. Excellent example of engaging with your target audience!
So, if we are all busy and who cares about what you had for breakfast … WHY on earth then would OREO have 17,445,181 “LIKES” on Facebook? People are wanting to BELONG, to express their view and to make a statement …..and it worked for Oreo. Oreo cookies lovers unite!
WHO DOES YOUR Social media? How to achieve results….
Your social media voice online is critical for building a positive brand experience for your customers. It’s a great way for you to address any negative questions or comments. Just like the traditional PR (a press release of any kind) you would not let your 15 year old niece write it, would you? Why would you let your teenage daughter “manage” your Social Media?
Social Media is no different from any other (traditional) marketing tool. There must be a plan, there must be a goal and there must be deliverables.
Do not go on a blind date with Social Media!
Analyze and measure and you may, too, soon see all the great benefits “Social Media” has to offer to your business!
